How many levels of Jannah are there?

In Islam, Jannah is the Arabic word for paradise or heaven. It is the ultimate reward for believers who follow the teachings of Islam and lead a righteous life. The Quran describes Jannah as a place of eternal bliss and happiness, where believers will be surrounded by bounties, luxuries, and pleasures beyond imagination. According to Islamic tradition, Jannah has multiple levels, each level higher and more beautiful than the one before it. In this article, we will discuss how many levels of Jannah are there in Islam.

How many levels of Jannah are there?

The concept of multiple levels of Jannah is mentioned in several Islamic texts, including the Quran, Hadith, and other scholarly works. According to the Quran, Jannah has “gardens of perpetual bliss” and “rivers of pure water, milk that never changes the taste, and wine that is delicious for those who drink” [1]Quran 47:15. The Quran also mentions that Jannah has “whatever the hearts desire and whatever the eyes find delight in” [2]Quran 43:71.

The Hadith, which is a collection of sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, further elaborates on the concept of levels of Jannah. According to one Hadith, Jannah has 100 levels, and each level is more beautiful than the one before it. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “In Jannah, there are a hundred levels, and between every two levels is a distance like that between the heavens and the earth” [3]Sahih al-Bukhari 2790.

In another Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned that the highest level of Jannah is called Firdaus, which is located at the center of Jannah. He said, “When you ask Allah for Jannah, ask Him for Al-Firdaus, for it is the middle of Jannah and the highest part of Jannah, and above it is the Throne of the Most Merciful” [4]Sunan an-Nasa’i 1317.

Imam al-Ghazali

Imam al-Ghazali, A prominent Islamic scholar, described Jannah as having four levels, with each level containing multiple sub-levels. He wrote, “Jannah has four levels: the level of those who enter Jannah without reckoning, the level of those who enter Jannah after a reckoning, the level of those who enter Jannah after being punished, and the level of those who enter Jannah after being purified. Each level has sub-levels, and the higher the level, the greater the reward” [5]Ihya Ulum al-Din.
