Neighbors Rights

Islam is such a lovely and beautiful religion that it has been describe in great detail. Every aspect of life is describe. Even in the Holy Qur’an, the Almighty Allah and His Beloved Prophet ﷺ have established certain rights of neighbors in the Hadeeths. It is obligatory for every Muslim man and woman to pay attention to them. It is said in Qur’an Majeed that,

Worship Allah ˹alone˺ and associate none with Him. And be kind to parents, relatives, orphans, the poor, near and distant neighbours, close friends, ˹needy˺ travellers, and those ˹bondspeople˺ in your possession. Surely Allah does not like whoever is arrogant, boastful.[1]پ5،النساء:36

Once Jibril was telling the rights of neighbors to the Holy Prophet ﷺ to the extent that Holy Prophet ﷺ started to think that soon Allah would make neighbors inheritors of each other’s properties.[2]صحیح مسلم ، کتاب البر والصلۃ ، باب الوصیۃ بالجاروالاحسان الیہ ، رقم۲۶۶۴،ص۱۴۱۳

Treat neighbors well

It is also narrated in a Hadith that. One day while the Holy Prophet ﷺ was performing ablution, the Companions علیھم الرضوان started to rub the remaining water of His ablution on their faces. The Holy Prophet ﷺ asked, why do you do that? The Companions علیھم الرضوان said that we are doing this in the spirit of love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Upon hearing this, the Prophet ﷺ instructed that whoever likes to love Allah and His Messenger ﷺ or the Almighty Allah and the Prophet ﷺ love him he must always speak the truth in everything and when he is made the trustee of something, he should pay the trust and treat his neighbors well.[3]شعب الایمان ، باب فی تعظیم النبی ﷺ …

And the Prophet ﷺ said that,

A person is not a perfect Muslim who eats on his own and his neighbor remains hungry.[4]

However, the following things should be take care for your neighbor.

  1. Always share the grief of your neighbor and help him in any way you can.
  2. Always be aware of your neighbor and be kind to them.
  3. You should also exchange some gifts and presents. Therefore, it is said in the Hadith that:
“When you people make soup, add some more water to it and increase the soup so that you can upkeep your neighbors and help them.”[5]صحیح مسلم، کتاب البر والصلۃ والاداب ،باب الوصیۃ بالجاروالاحسان الیہ، رقم ۲۶۲۵،ص۱۴۱۳

May Allah help us to fulfill the rights of our neighbors as well. Ameen
